Siberian Cat Allergies: Understanding the Hypoallergenic Trait

For millions of animal lovers, cat allergies are a major barrier to pet ownership. The Traditional Siberian Forest Cat offers a unique ray of hope — and we are here to give you honest, science-based information to help you decide.

What Makes the Siberian Forest Cat Hypoallergenic?

It is a common misconception that cat allergies are caused by fur or dander alone. In reality, the primary culprit is a specific protein called Fel d 1. This protein is produced naturally in a cat's saliva, tear ducts, skin glands, and perianal glands. When a cat grooms itself, the Fel d 1 protein dries on the fur, becomes airborne, and triggers symptoms like sneezing, watery eyes, and asthma.

Scientific studies have shown that purebred Siberian Forest Cats naturally produce significantly lower levels of the Fel d 1 protein than standard domestic cats. Because their bodies create less of the allergen at the source, they are frequently tolerated by individuals with mild-to-severe feline allergies.

It is important to understand that hypoallergenic means less allergenic — not allergy-free. No cat breed produces zero Fel d 1. However, we are very compatible with most allergy sufferers and many families who could not previously own a cat live happily with a Siberian.

Is There Such a Thing as a 100% Hypoallergenic Cat?

No — and any breeder who claims otherwise is not being truthful with you. Because all cats produce some level of Fel d 1 protein, a reaction is always possible depending on an individual's unique immune system sensitivity.

⚠ While many of our families from Toronto, Barrie, and across Canada report zero symptoms around our cats, everyone's allergy profile is different. A person may react to one specific cat but show no symptoms around another.

Additionally, intact breeding cats generally produce more allergens than altered (spayed or neutered) kittens and adults. Your kitten's allergen levels will settle further after their spay or neuter surgery — another reason our kittens go home as altered companions.

We also encourage you to research the different types of cat allergies — some people are allergic to Fel d 1, others to different proteins entirely. Understanding your specific allergy is key to making the right decision.

Why True Traditional Siberian Bloodlines Matter for Allergies

As a dedicated registered Siberian cat breeder, Iceforest Siberians focuses exclusively on true traditional Siberian Forest Cats. We do not cross-breed our lines with Neva Masquerade (colorpoint) variations.

Preserving the native, unadulterated Russian bloodlines is not just about historical accuracy — it also plays a role in maintaining the natural genetic traits of the breed, including their unique low-allergen protein profile. When a breeder crosses a Siberian with a colorpoint to produce a Neva Masquerade, there is no guarantee the resulting cat retains the same low-Fel d 1 characteristics of the traditional line.

By choosing a purebred traditional Siberian from Iceforest Siberians, you are getting a cat whose heritage has been meticulously tracked, imported directly from Russia, and preserved for health, temperament, and lower allergen markers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I definitely be allergy-free with a Siberian?

Not guaranteed — but the odds are significantly in your favour. The vast majority of our families with mild to moderate cat allergies report little to no reaction around our cats.

Are male or female Siberians better for allergies?

Neutered males and spayed females tend to produce the least Fel d 1. Intact males produce the most. All our pet kittens go home as altered companions.

Does coat colour or length affect allergen levels?

There is some evidence that certain colours may produce less Fel d 1, but this varies cat to cat. Individual variation within the breed is the most important factor.

Can I request a fur sample before applying?

Yes — fur samples are our current allergy testing method and are available to serious applicants across Canada. Please contact us after reviewing our process and pricing to arrange a fur sample.

Do you have an allergy return policy?

Yes. Our sales contract includes an allergy return clause. Please ask us for details during your application process.
